Sheriff Reveals Three Children Discovered ‘Essentially Abandoned’ for Years in Suburban Detroit Home

On February 19, 2025, three children were discovered living in deplorable conditions at a home in Pontiac, Michigan. The Oakland County Sheriff described the situation as “basically abandoned,” with the children having lived alone for years while their mother resided elsewhere.

The children, aged 15, 13, and 12, were found after a landlord expressed concern about unpaid rent. Their mother is now in jail as prosecutors consider charges against her.

The discovery of the children came after a landlord reported that their mother had fallen behind on rent payments. Upon investigation by police on February 19, they found the house filled with trash and feces to such an extent that officers needed hazmat suits to enter safely. The sheriff indicated that the toilet was non-functional and trash was piled up several feet high throughout the home.

According to Sheriff Mike Bouchard, the children had been living in these conditions for possibly over four years. They received minimal contact from their mother during this time and were reportedly afraid to leave the house. The boy among them mentioned he had only ventured outside twice in years.
