STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The U.S. Coast Guard is actively searching for a sixth person missing in the water approximately five miles southeast of Breezy Point following a boat capsizing incident on February 24, 2025. Five individuals were recovered from the vessel around noon, with rescue efforts ongoing.

The incident began when New York City 911 operators alerted Coast Guard Sector New York about a “vessel in distress” near Breezy Point. In response, the Coast Guard deployed three rescue boats and an MH-65 helicopter to assist in the operation.
Rescue crews recovered five individuals from the water. Two of them were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital while three others were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook where emergency medical services awaited their arrival. Unfortunately, three of those rescued were later pronounced dead.
