The incident occurred when four Russian tourists, accompanied by a Filipino dive instructor, were diving in waters south of Manila. They traveled by boat from Puerto Galera to the popular diving site off Verde Island. During the dive, strong undercurrents swept the group away, leading to a tragic outcome.
Two of the tourists managed to return to the dive boat, but Peregudin and Melekhov went missing. Melekhov was located unconscious about an hour later and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to coast guard provincial commander Capt. Airland Lapitan, Peregudin was found while being attacked by sharks, with severe injuries. He stated that Peregudin’s right arm had been severed during the attack. The coast guard is currently investigating the incident and plans to meet with provincial officials to discuss safety measures to prevent future occurrences at Verde Island and other diving locations.
