Antarctic Researcher Alleges Colleague Issued Death Threat and Assaulted Him in Remote Expedition Incident

A member of a South African research team at the Sanae IV Antarctic base has accused a colleague of physical assault and making a death threat. The allegations were detailed in an email sent from the base and shared with the South African newspaper, the Sunday Times, on March 16, 2025.

The accuser expressed fears for their safety and that of their colleagues, demanding immediate action from authorities. South Africa’s environment minister, Dion George, confirmed the incident and stated that an intervention is in place.

The Sanae IV research base, located about 100 miles south of Antarctica’s ice shelf, is home to a 10-person team conducting scientific research. The allegations surfaced in an email that described a disturbing escalation of behavior from the accused, including physical assault and a death threat. The email emphasized the urgent need for action to ensure the safety of all team members.

Minister Dion George acknowledged the assault and mentioned that the individual involved has shown remorse and undergone psychological evaluation. He noted that the dispute arose from a disagreement over a weather-dependent task that required a schedule change. The team, which has been in Antarctica since late December, is not scheduled to be relieved until December due to harsh weather conditions.

Concerns about the accused’s behavior had been raised multiple times since the team’s arrival. The South African department of forestry, fisheries, and the environment is currently investigating the situation and is in continuous contact with the team to ensure their well-being. South Africa has maintained a presence in Antarctica since 1960, focusing on various scientific studies including geology and biodiversity.
