- Polish Armed Forces assisting with recovery efforts
The soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, went missing during a training exercise at the General Silvestras Žukauskas training ground in Pabradė, Lithuania. Their vehicle, an M88 Hercules, was discovered submerged in 15 feet of water on March 26. Recovery teams are facing difficulties due to the marshy terrain, which does not support heavy equipment without extensive engineering modifications.
To assist in the recovery, U.S. Army Europe and Africa have deployed cranes, a large-capacity pump, and over 30 tons of gravel to help drain the area and extract the vehicle. However, the operation is expected to be lengthy due to slow water drainage and groundwater seepage. The area is described as “incredibly wet and marshy,” complicating the recovery efforts.
A U.S. Navy dive crew is being brought in to aid the operation, and the Polish Armed Forces have volunteered to provide engineers, equipment, and 150 personnel to assist in the recovery. Major General Curtis Taylor, commander of the 1st Armored Division, expressed commitment to bringing the soldiers home, highlighting the unity and determination of the unit during this challenging time.
The ongoing recovery operation underscores the challenges faced by military personnel in training environments. As efforts continue, the focus remains on locating and recovering the missing soldiers while ensuring the safety of all involved in the operation.
