Political parties seeking to label ‘Antifa’ as a terrorist organization are paving the way for fascism, as fascist violence escalates. This began in the US, where Trump aims to classify ‘Antifa’ as a terrorist group, and in the Netherlands, a law was passed with George-Louis Bouchez supporting similar actions.
- Political parties want to label 'Antifa' as terrorists.
- Trump aims to list 'Antifa' as a terrorist organization.
- Thousands of fascist rioters attacked the parliament in The Hague.
- Els Rechts organized the protest that turned violent.
- The page 'ANTIFA Nederland' spreads misinformation about antifascists.
- Extremist right-wing groups are well-organized and coordinated.
The issue is that ‘Antifa’ is not a terrorist organization nor an actual organization. It is simply an abbreviation for antifascist, with no membership cards, and if everyone opposing fascism is considered part of it, I hope it still represents the majority of the population.
Those who wish to ban antifascism open the door to fascism. This was evident in the Netherlands, where thousands of fascist rioters attempted to breach the parliament in The Hague, destroyed the headquarters of the liberal D66 party, set a police car on fire, and injured six journalists.
“I do not go along with the ‘mainstream narrative’ about the Holocaust.”
— Participant at the protest
The protest that turned into riots was organized by a 26-year-old woman named Els Rechts. While major media journalists seemed to lack time for this, the Facebook page Allemaal Van Belang investigated her background.
Els Rechts’ Twitter account was created in 2009 when she was ten years old, which is at least peculiar. The account may have been recently acquired to spread far-right propaganda.
Allemaal Van Belang notes that the far-right often employs tactics to artificially inflate followers or likes through methods like bot farms. The principle is “Fake it till you make it,” as those who appear to have many followers tend to attract more.
Orchestrated Opposition
Simultaneously, as Els Rechts purchased her blue verification badge on Twitter, a page named ‘ANTIFA Nederland‘ appeared on Facebook, consistently portraying antifascist movements negatively.
This is termed orchestrated opposition: doing bad things in the name of your opponent to justify a reaction. This tactic is frequently used by the far-right, evident as posts from Els Rechts were shared on the page to increase her reach on Facebook.
After the protest escalated into riots, the ‘ANTIFA Nederland’ page shared posts suggesting that ‘Antifa’ was actually behind the violence in The Hague. These posts were also disseminated by Els Rechts and shared thousands of times.
The question arises whether this is merely the amateurish antics of one woman seeking money and status or if parties like PVV or FvD are aware of this. This remains a rhetorical question. While it is unclear who is behind this, it should be evident that the far-right is well organized.
Shedding Naivety
We no longer have the luxury to be naïve about the danger of the far-right. In the united states, we see daily where they aim to go, and here they are organizing to push in the same direction. To stop them, the democratic camp urgently needs to organize better.
As Ico Maly states, “Those who know their history understand that this was also said in the Weimar Republic: the reason Hitler could rise to power was that there were not enough democrats saying: ¡No pasarán!”
