The city of Haarlem plans to reduce the use of open fireplaces among 7,100 households, as announced by Alderman Robbert Berkhout (Sustainability). The initiative aims to minimize the impact of wood smoke on residents’ health and comfort.
- 7,100 households in Haarlem have open fireplaces.
- Robbert Berkhout is the sustainability alderman.
- Measures may start in summer 2027 if issues persist.
- A quarter of Dutch people experience wood smoke nuisance.
- RIVM's burning guide will raise public awareness.
- Utrecht plans to ban all wood burning by 2030.
Berkhout stated, “Overlast van houtrook kan veel meer impact hebben dan het ongemak van een ongewenste geur.” He emphasized the need to prevent health risks and disturbances for other residents.
If the nuisance does not significantly decrease during the winters of 2025 and 2026, Berkhout warned that additional regulatory measures might be necessary, potentially starting in the summer of 2027.
