Following its launch earlier this month, the Google app for Windows is now prompting users to uninstall and reinstall the app to get continued updates.
The Google app for Windows is currently in Labs status, with updates to come in time. Google is recommending that users uninstall the app and reinstall it to ensure continued delivery of all future updates.
The message reads:
Keep receiving Google app updates
To ensure continued delivery of all future updates:
- Uninstall the current app from your installed apps list.
- Return to Google Labs and redownload the app.
There’s no explanation provided for why this might be needed, but it sounds like there may be a problem in the existing release.
The initial Google app for Windows release carries the version number 0.1.15.0, while the latest release from Google Labs is version 0.1.15.1. On the machine where this pop-up appeared, the app had already updated to the latest version, but the uninstall and redownload process re-installed the original version. There’s no way to manually update the app.
Whatever the problem may be, this is hopefully a one-time error. If you need to redownload the Google app for Windows, it’s available through Google Labs.
