On September 30, 2025, the Antwerp police issued fines to 54 cyclists for cycling against the traffic at the Schijnpoort tunnel. The area has been a point of concern for local cyclists.
Concerns Over Traffic Situation
According to the police, the location has multiple complaints regarding cyclists and users of steppers who cycle against the direction of traffic. This prompted extensive checks in the area. The traffic situation for cyclists at this location is described as not logically arranged.
Before reaching the tunnel, cyclists can ride in both directions on the bike path from Park Spoor Noord. However, just past the tunnel, the bike path appears the same and is of equal width, but is restricted to one direction. This restriction is indicated by a small no-entry sign.
Required Traffic Maneuvers
Cyclists must navigate two traffic lights to cross the street to ride towards the city center. This situation adds complexity for cyclists attempting to follow designated routes and may contribute to the confusion leading to complaints.
