Apple is developing a new version of its AR/VR headset, tentatively named the Apple Vision Pro 2. This follows the original Apple Vision Pro’s launch in early 2024. Sales for the initial model have declined significantly since its debut.
Technical Upgrades for Vision Pro 2
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the Vision Pro 2 will feature Apple’s upcoming M5 chipset. However, Mark Gurman, an Apple insider, has indicated that the new model may utilize the current M4 chipset. Regardless, both options represent a notable upgrade from the M2 chip used in the original Vision Pro, which also includes the R1 chip.
Additionally, Gurman reports that Apple is enhancing the neural engine, increasing its cores beyond the current 16. This improvement aims to boost the device’s capabilities in AI-related tasks.
Design Improvements and User Comfort
Another significant enhancement for the Vision Pro 2 is its headstrap. Users have expressed discomfort due to the device’s weight, which is approximately 1.4 pounds. The new headstrap is designed to alleviate neck strain and head pain, allowing for longer usage periods.
Apple aims to release the Vision Pro 2 by Spring 2026. Following this, the company plans to introduce a more affordable and lighter AR/VR headset, expected to launch in 2027 or later.
