The PS department in Molenbeek has been under administration since May due to internal tensions and irregularities concerning the appointment of alderman Mohammed Kalandar. This oversight has now been extended for three more months as of September 30, 2025.
Current Oversight Situation
The department was placed under administration after the national vigilance commission invalidated Kalandar’s appointment. According to federal parliament member Khalil Aouasti, this decision has yet to be implemented. Alongside former pensions minister Karine Lalieux and Laurent Gabelle, a confidant of Anderlecht’s mayor Fabrice Cumps, Aouasti has been tasked with restoring order.
They had aimed to conclude this matter in three months, but Aouasti noted the complexities involved, stating, “We will continue to work to bring peace to the department.” The initial phase of their mission led to a new leadership structure, with El Mostafa Kahouache becoming the new president.
Impact of Mayor Moureaux’s Absence
Aouasti indicated that the extension of Mayor Catherine Moureaux’s sick leave did not influence the oversight renewal. He clarified, “The municipality and the local department are two separate matters. We need to ensure party organs function correctly.” Moureaux, while absent, remains significant in her role as the party leader.
A new evaluation regarding the future of the department is scheduled for three months from now.
