Funcom is laying off staff and closing a studio for Dune: Awakening.

Funcom, owned by Tencent, is undergoing significant changes, which include layoffs and closing its studio, The Outsiders. The studio developed a survival MMO that launched successfully, selling one million copies in less than two weeks, marking it as the fastest-selling game in Funcom’s 32-year history. In a statement, Funcom mentioned that the transition from development to long-term operation, along with preparations for a major console release next year, necessitates restructuring teams and reallocating resources across various projects and studios. Unfortunately, this process will also lead to job losses. David Goldfarb, founder and creative director of The Outsiders, stated on Bluesky that all studio members have been affected by the layoffs, leading to the closure of the ten-year-old studio. He expressed a desire to continue in some new capacity, acknowledging the difficulty of this transition. Funcom has not yet responded to requests for further comment.
