A café owner in Zwartberg has been implicated in human and drug trafficking activities, along with his 21-year-old son and six others. Concerns have been raised about the son’s deep involvement at such a young age. This situation came to light on October 3, 2025.

Criminal Background

The accused has a history with justice, having faced convictions for drug-related offenses thrice before. Information surfaced in December 2021, indicating that he was dealing drugs from his café. His 21-year-old son was allegedly recruited for this purpose. Law enforcement utilized phone surveillance and observations, highlighting the son’s frequent short trips, often stopping at a brothel during nighttime.

Associated Drug Operations

Investigations led to six house searches across Genk, Houthalen-Helchteren, and Zutendaal. Officers found cannabis plants, a developing cannabis plantation, and cash. The prosecutor noted that the group was well-organized and actively involved in risk distribution, using easily exploitable victims for their operations. “They were blind to the problems that drugs cause,” they stated.

The son faces a potential sentence of 40 months in prison with part of it suspended, along with a fine of €20,000. During the proceedings, the prosecutor expressed concern over the son’s young age and lack of a prior criminal record, highlighting the difficulties of growing up in such an environment.

Human Trafficking Allegations

Phone taps revealed the café owner allegedly collaborated with accomplices, including a 55-year-old man from Genk, in human trafficking. They reportedly attempted to recruit two women from Romania in October 2022 for prostitution but encountered issues with documentation. The prosecutor commented that these women were dependent on the suspects for shelter and income, and their language barriers made it impossible for them to manage their own affairs.

The café owner has been recommended to serve an additional 18 months of imprisonment and pay a €24,000 fine. Another suspect faces a recommendation for 40 months in prison. The remaining accomplices might receive sentences ranging from 10 months to 2 years, which could include conditional release.
