Apple Stores are implementing measures to prevent scratches and marks on display units following concerns about the iPhone 17 lineup. Shoppers have reported scratches on the back glass and camera plateau of display units.
Apple identified that the marks on display units were due to worn MagSafe stands. According to 9to5Mac’s Chance Miller, Apple stated, “It has determined these imperfections are caused by worn MagSafe stands used in some stores.” The company clarified that the marks are material transfer from the stand to the phone and can be removed with cleaning.
Apple is reportedly working to replace the worn MagSafe stands in stores. Other iPhone models, including the iPhone 16, are also affected by this issue. The MagSafe stands resemble the MagSafe chargers sold by Apple, featuring a metal ring that can get scuffed over time.
How Apple is fixing the problem
Recently, Apple Stores have begun adding silicone rings around the edges of their stands to mitigate the issue. However, these silicone rings do not address existing scratches. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted that Apple has instructed retail employees to clean demo units more regularly using a specific salt solution.
While the exact mixture used by Apple is unknown, an individual attempted to replicate the effect with water and sea salt, finding it effective in removing marks from their iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple’s measures indicate a commitment to maintaining the quality of their display units. Consumers are encouraged to share their experiences with removing marks.
