iPadOS 26.1 Beta 2 Restores Slide Over Multitasking for iPad
On October 6, 2025, Apple released iPadOS 26.1 beta 2 for developers, bringing back the Slide Over multitasking feature for the iPad.
Slide Over Returns with a Key Limitation
The initial launch of iPadOS 26 introduced a new windowing system for apps, removing the previous Split View and Slide Over multitasking features.
Some users considered the removal of Slide Over a regression in functionality. While Split View can be replicated with the new system, there was no easy way to quickly access apps as Slide Over allowed.
iPadOS 26.1 beta 2 restores the Slide Over feature, which works alongside the new windowing system.
When using an app window, you can now access a new option titled ‘Enter Slide Over’ from the window resize controls located in the green button at the top-left corner. This option resizes the window to standard Slide Over dimensions, enabling users to view and work with background apps without hiding the Slide Over app.
You can also swipe the app out of view and bring it back as needed. Additionally, resizing the Slide Over window has now become possible, which is a new improvement.
However, one significant limitation exists in beta 2: users can only maintain one Slide Over app at a time. In iPadOS 18, users could stack multiple apps in Slide Over mode and switch between them easily, which is not possible in this version. Users hope this feature may return during the beta testing phase.
For those missing Slide Over in iPadOS 26, Apple is providing at least a partial solution with this upcoming release.
