On October 1, 2025, 64-year-old Ivo Laurent delivered mail in Oud-Heverlee for the last time after over 35 years of dedicated service. He was well-known in the community for his cheerful demeanor and willingness to chat.
Community Farewell
The local post office announced Ivo’s retirement, prompting residents to decorate their mailboxes with flags and balloons. Many expressed their gratitude to him in the streets through handwritten messages.
Ivo remarked, “This is very kind. The whole neighborhood has reacted to the note from the post office. That means something. It’s a sign of mutual trust. I delivered their letters for years and they are thanking me now.”
He explained that he always aimed to be friendly, regardless of the weather or workload. “Even if it was bad weather or I had a lot of work, I tried to say hello. I found that social contact very important,” he noted.
Much effort was put into Ivo’s farewell by the community. A resident, Diane, patiently waited for him on his final morning. She had prepared a personal envelope and a bottle of wine. “Ivo was one in a million,” she said. “He was a very kind person, always cheerful. You could ask him anything; he was always there to help.”
Changes Over the Years
According to Ivo, there have been significant changes in the postal service over the years. “First, I delivered mail by bike, then by scooter, and now by electric car,” he explained. He also noted an increase in parcel deliveries, which has decreased social interactions with residents.
