Microsoft is rolling out its annual Windows 11 update, version 25H2, starting today, September 30, 2025. This update follows testing in the Windows Insider Release Preview ring last month and is available to all Windows 11 users via Windows Update.
Details of the 25H2 Update
The 25H2 update is delivered as a small “enablement package.” According to the source, it contains all recently announced features from Windows 11, version 24H2. John Cable, vice president of program management for Windows servicing and delivery, noted that both versions share a code base and servicing branch, which streamlines the update process.
Microsoft will continue to release new features monthly for both versions of Windows 11. The 25H2 update includes advancements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, along with AI-assisted secure coding. This version is designed to address and mitigate security threats in line with a robust security development lifecycle (SDL) policy.
The update is also leaner due to the removal of PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC). Users can obtain the 25H2 update by ensuring the “get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option is enabled in Windows Update.
Rollout and Known Issues
Microsoft plans to expand the rollout of version 25H2 over the next few months. If any issues are detected, such as application or driver incompatibility, a safeguard hold may be placed on the update until those issues are resolved. Known issues and device incompatibilities will be shared on the Windows release health hub.
