Microsoft is developing a dedicated OneDrive app for Windows 11, featuring a modern interface focused on photo and video viewing, along with file management. This information was reported on October 3, 2025.
New App Features
The new OneDrive app has been discovered on Microsoft’s servers, appearing as a separate executable in the app’s program files. When launched, it displays a new OneDrive icon on the Taskbar and opens a window directing users to their OneDrive photo library.
This app utilizes a web-based design that combines Fluent Design with web elements. It includes rounded menu bars and drop-down menus, all featuring Acrylic blur effects that align with the Windows 11 aesthetic.
Users can switch between gallery mode and file mode at the top left of the app. The file management interface mirrors that of the OneDrive website, but a new Copilot feature is available when hovering over files. This feature allows users to engage in a Copilot chat to ask questions or generate summaries without needing to open the files.
Gallery Mode and Editing Tools
The gallery mode, which is not available on the standard OneDrive website, includes buttons for navigating photo and video editing features such as Moments, Gallery, Albums, People, and Favorites. The Moments feature displays a collection of pictures taken on the current day in years past, presented attractively in the app.
The gallery tab has been redesigned with a floating menu bar that appears at the bottom when a photo is selected for editing or deletion. Built-in editing tools are included, similar to those in the Windows Photos app.
Although the purpose of this dedicated app remains unclear, it may serve users who prefer to organize their files in one place rather than through multiple system apps. The app is reported to be responsive and visually appealing, raising questions about the performance of other web apps like Outlook on Windows 11.
