Firefighters are attempting to clear a trail of refined rapeseed oil, also known as frying oil, spanning ten kilometers. The incident affects several roads, including Nieuwevaart and Brugsevaart, and is ongoing as of October 3, 2025.
Details of the Situation
According to fire department spokesperson Renée Vansteenwinckel, the oil trail runs through the Industrieweg and some smaller streets. The firefighting team is using a high-pressure cleaner to remove the substance. However, the cleanup process is taking longer than anticipated due to the extensive length of the spill.
According to the source, the police are on-site to manage some of the traffic disruptions caused by the incident. Vansteenwinckel also noted that certain parts of the road have been closed off to ensure safety and facilitate cleanup operations.
Current Traffic Conditions
As of shortly before 4 PM, the fire department reported that the cleanup efforts are progressing slowly. Vansteenwinckel indicated that the roads will remain closed for an extended period, even during peak traffic hours.
