Today, Meta officially confirmed that WhatsApp now supports Live Photos, a feature some users had noticed recently.
In a News/2025/09/live-motion-photos-meta-ai-chat-themes-video-call-backgrounds-more-whatsapp/”>Newsroom post, Meta announced several features recently added to the app, including compatibility with Live Photos on iOS and Motion Photos on Android. Users can see Live Photos animate briefly when sent or received, similar to viewing them in the iOS photo album.
The Live Photo indicator appears in the top-left corner of these images, and tapping it plays the audio recorded during capture. Some iOS users have reported difficulties sending Live Photos, even though they can receive them.

In addition to Live Photos, Meta highlighted new chat themes powered by Meta AI, new sticker packs, easier group search, document scanning on Android, and new video call backgrounds created with Meta AI.
