Minister Wiersma van LVVN plans to replace AERIUS as part of a new emission policy based on goal-oriented management, with several steps needed for legal validity. A new version of AERIUS Calculator and AERIUS Monitor will be implemented starting October 7.
- Minister Wiersma van LVVN wants to replace AERIUS.
- New version AERIUS Calculator starts on 7 October.
- RIVM updates nitrogen deposition monitoring data this year.
- Clean Air Outlook informs foreign emission estimates.
- Report on nitrogen deposition expected early October.
The demissionary cabinet aims to eventually replace AERIUS Calculator with a legally sustainable alternative. Currently, nitrogen deposition calculations are typically required for granting permissions. According to Wiersma, further development of goal-oriented management will provide significant points of leverage for transitioning to emission management as an alternative to AERIUS.
The new version of AERIUS Calculator and AERIUS Monitor will take effect on October 7. This update incorporates recent scientific information, including updated emission factors and data on nitrogen-sensitive nature in Natura 2000 areas.
The RIVM is implementing significant changes to monitoring figures for total nitrogen deposition, which is crucial for understanding the overload of Natura 2000 areas. Current data from all domestic and foreign emission sources will be included in AERIUS Monitor.
Projections for total nitrogen deposition in the Netherlands will be based on new emission estimates from the Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving. The RIVM will clarify the implications of these updates in the upcoming report ‘Monitor Stikstofdepositie in Natura 2000-gebieden,’ expected to be published in early October.
