Techland’s open-world zombie RPG is here, and after spending over a dozen hours with it, I have some tips to share with folks either hopping in for the first time or looking for extra help during their next zombie-killin’ session.
- Techland’s open-world zombie RPG is called Beast.
- Prioritize getting the drop kick ability early on.
- Activate safehouses for protection during the night.
- Use Survivor Sense to spot loot and enemies.
- Unlock safes by feeling for vibrations on the dial.
As with past games, you have a kick button. Kicking the undead doesn’t use much stamina and can keep them from grabbing you. You can kick them off roofs and ledges for easy kills.
Very early on in Beast, you gain access to the game’s skill tree. Prioritize getting the drop kick ability, which lets you do a powerful two-footed jump kick that can send multiple zombies flying.
Also, grab the safe landing skill found in the top section of the skill tree. It allows you to drop from extreme heights and take no damage by holding the crouch button before landing.
Weapons can only be repaired so many times, so don’t get too attached to powerful melee weapons. If you have a specific weapon’s blueprint, you can craft it repeatedly, but be cautious with unique finds.
When a weapon is out of repairs, you can toss it at a zombie. To do so on a controller, hold the attack button and click the right stick. On keyboard, hold the attack button and hit F.
Always unlock new safehouses and towers when you spot them on the map. Once activated, they become safe zones that can save you from the night and act as spawn points when you die.
If you’ve just killed a large horde of zombies, don’t waste time searching each corpse for loot. Instead, run away a few hundred feet and turn back around to find grey bags containing loot.
You get double XP at night for all your actions, which helps you level up faster. Stick near a safehouse or tower to farm loot and resources while avoiding super zombies.
Kyle Crane has a “Survivor Sense” ability that marks loot and searchable containers near you. Use this to grab supplies quickly and avoid or surprise enemies.
Pick up every weapon and dismantle them for extra resources. This will provide materials to craft better gear and repair the weapons you actually use.
Keep an eye out for random events indicated by a blue icon on your compass. These events can yield XP and loot or involve rescuing hostages or survivors.
After saving a hostage, you can kill them for their weapon without any consequences in the game. This can provide extra resources.
You can unlock safes without the code by slowly turning the safe’s dial and feeling for a vibration, allowing you to crack any safe without the combination.
