The Werkvennootschap installed a bicycle bridge over the E40 in Heverlee last night. The completion was quicker than anticipated, with the entire 112-meter bridge ready by this morning. Local residents flocked to see the new structure today.
Installation Progress
Work on the bicycle bridge occurred overnight rather than over two nights as initially planned. This swifter execution is beneficial for traffic flow, although it left some spectators disappointed who expected more activity this afternoon.
One neighborhood resident expressed surprise at the News of the bridge’s overnight installation. Another nearby dweller remarked, “I live close by, so I came to take a look. I find it very beautiful, and the work finished quickly.”
As crowds continued to gather, the Werkvennootschap distributed free ice cream. A local stated, “We came here specifically with a picnic blanket, making a day of it.” A passerby noted, “We regularly bike in this area. Now that the bridge is nearly complete, it’s interesting to come see it.”
Significant Investment
The bridge has a cost of 20 million euros and plays a vital role in the F29 cycling route connecting Brussels and Leuven. One attendee mentioned, “I no longer have a car, but I do have an electric bike. This bridge will make my life easier, allowing me to bike in and out of the city more smoothly.”
The bridge remains incomplete and will require a mast installation by the Werkvennootschap in November. First cyclists could use the bridge at the beginning of next year. As of this morning, vehicle traffic on the E40 towards Brussels resumed. The lanes towards Liège are expected to reopen by 9 PM tonight.
